Private by design

Most audio-to-text services upload your recording to their servers to transcribe it. This one does not. The Whisper speech model runs directly in your browser using WebGPU or WebAssembly, so your file is processed on your own device and never leaves it. That makes it a good fit for sensitive recordings — interviews, medical notes, legal audio, or anything you would rather not hand to a third party.

The model downloads once the first time you use the tool, then it is cached by your browser for instant reuse.

What you can transcribe

  • Voice memos and phone recordings
  • Interviews and research audio
  • Meeting and lecture recordings
  • Podcast episodes and audio files
  • The audio track of a video (mp4, webm)
  • Any mp3, m4a, wav, or ogg file

Frequently asked questions

Is this audio to text tool free?

Yes — completely free, with no signup, no install, and no usage limits. Transcription runs in your browser at no cost.

Is my file private?

Yes. The file is transcribed entirely on your own device using the Whisper model. Your audio and the transcript never leave your computer — nothing is uploaded.

What audio and video formats can I transcribe?

Any file your browser can decode — mp3, m4a, wav, ogg, webm, and the audio track of mp4 and mov videos. If a video will not decode, convert its audio to mp3 or wav first.

Can I transcribe a video file?

Yes. Drop in a video and the tool transcribes its audio track. Support depends on what your browser can decode; mp4 and webm work in most browsers.

How accurate is it?

It uses OpenAI's open Whisper model, which is accurate on clear speech across many languages. Noise, overlapping speakers, or low quality reduce accuracy — and the transcript is editable so you can fix anything.

Is there a length limit?

No hard limit, but everything runs on your device, so long files take longer. A computer with WebGPU handles long recordings much faster than one using WebAssembly.
